The Wire - Complete Series 1 to 5 DVD Box Set
The phenomenon of friend’s telling reluctant friend’s how good HBO’s The Wire is and urging them to watch it immediately is now so much of a cliché that it has almost become a cliché in itself to refer to it in reviews. However, The Wire really is that good and you really should watch it immediately.
Set in the troubled East Coast city of Baltimore, it deals with the modern metropolitan social ills of drugs, corruption, inequality and vice in an overtly political yet still utterly gripping fashion. Superbly written, shot, directed and acted (including by British talents Dominic West and Idris Elba) it manages to present complex and often disturbing subject matter in a manner that is nonetheless thoroughly entertaining.
This box set spans five seasons over 60 episodes, starting from the first season’s focus on the police investigation into a drug gang in Baltimore’s downtown, and expanding through the series to encompass a wider and wider range of interconnected plots and protagonists. Along the way we encounter some truly memorable characters, and such is their detailed development that confounds usual T.V. stereotypes it is hard not to connect with them and the larger issues they are caught up in. It is a truly immersive television experience, and once you have seen it you will likely be added to the ranks urging your friends to do the same.
This edition also includes episode commentaries with creator David Simon, director Clarke Johnson and writer George Pelacanos, interviews with the cast and crew and an illuminative documentary.
