Brilliantly subtle with beautifully drawn characters, The Office is not your average comedy. There’s no canned laughter and few gags - in fact - the best bits have you wincing behind a cushion at the appalling reality that is The Office.
Set in the soulless, Slough sub-branch of Paper Merchants, Wernham Hogg, this “mocumentary” follows life in an average workplace where workers endure the daily grind of unfulfilling employment, irritating colleagues and job security worries.
Every character seems familiar as skilfully observed caricatures of colleagues we have all encountered in our working lives including Gareth (McKenzie Cook) the anal, T.A. obsessed Team Leader, Chris Finch (Ralph Ineson) the obnoxious, sleazy Sales Rep and flirtatious but engaged receptionist Dawn (Lucy Davis).
In the midst of the mundane madness is everyman Tim (Martin Freeman), barely clinging to his sanity in a world of stationary cupboards and mind-numbing banality. Of course, it wouldn’t be a real office without a boss from hell - a role more than filled by egotistic David Brent (Ricky Gervais) who continually plays up to the camera in a effort to show the world how funny and popular he is within the office – usually with cringingly awkward results.
Memorable scenes from The Office have since been elevated to classic comedy status, from the hilarious and much emulated David Brent dance, to the disastrous team building day and Tim’s stapler in jelly trick on Gareth.
