Scrubs - Series 1 to 8 DVD Box Set

Nominated for seventeen Emmys and three Golden Globes, ‘Scrubs’ is a hit US comedy set in the wards of Sacred Heart Hospital. Played by Zach Braff (‘Garden State’), novice doctor J.D. starts out as an intern at the hospital, trying to balance his personal life with the needs of his patients. We see the world through J.D.’s eyes - both in terms of hilarious narration and brief adventures inside his head!

You can’t get through life alone, and J.D. relies on a little help from his friends from medical school - best friend and ‘big black bear’ Turk (Donald Faison) and on-off love interest Eliot (Sarah Chalke). J.D. also benefits from the reluctant input of his mentor, the bad-tempered Dr Cox (John C. McGinley) - who insists on calling J.D. by a series of girls’ names and teaching him lessons the hard way!

Throughout the eight seasons included in this set, J.D. progresses up the ranks but his skewed perspective of the world and wacky daydreams remain the same, opening up a world of comedy that blends clever one-liners with surreal visuals. It’s a style of comedy later adopted by shows like ‘Family Guy’, but initially bought to the mainstream and refined by ‘Scrubs’. Every episode guarantees belly laughs from the second it starts right up until the credits.

At its best, though, ‘Scrubs’ manages to branch out from the heightened world of comedy and touch upon real issues - particularly the ruthless world of commercial healthcare and the disregard for patient wellbeing as money-making options arise. This is also a show not afraid to take risks - unusually for a comedy, even one set within a hospital, ‘Scrubs’ can at times be hard-hitting with the tragedies of life, providing a great counterpoint to the comedic moments.

Let’s not forget, though, that this is a sitcom, and a fresh, innovative one at that. ‘Scrubs’ veers in some strange, surprising directions, particularly in its daydream sequences, and with some of the best recurring characters on TV - the maniacal Janitor being the absolute highlight - ‘Scrubs’ is remarkably consistent in its comedy and never fails to deliver.

This box set features seasons one to eight in their entirety - the full duration of the show which featured Zach Braff in the lead role. So, if you’re looking to follow J.D. from his days as a lowly intern right through to his last moments in Sacred Heart, this 29 DVD set is just what the doctor ordered!
