Scrubs - Series 1 to 7 Complete DVD Box Set
Created by Bill Lawrence in 2001, Scrubs has become one of the US’s most successful comedies. As the show continues into a surprising 9th season, this box set should really be called Scrubs: The NBC Years as ABC took on the show after the 7th season was rumoured to be the final run. Part sitcom, part soap, part drama, it’s a series that provides plenty of funny asides along with some touching moments about the painful realities of being a doctor.
The show follows the pleasantly likeable J.D. (Zach Braff) who begins the show as an intern at the Sacred Heart Hospital. It’s his narration that guides the viewer through each episode as J.D. and others realise just how strange and frightening it can be working in the medical profession. J.D.’s friend Turk (Donald Faison) trains to be a surgeon while entering into his first serious relationship with nurse Carla (Judy Reyes) and J.D. has frequent romantic entanglements with the neurotic Elliot (Sarah Chalke).
With J.D.’s frequent daydreams providing the surreal humour, it’s up to his world-weary elders to bring him down to Earth. Running the hospital is the cold-hearted Kelso (Ken Jenkins) who has to balance bureaucracy with saving lives but it’s J.D.’s mentor Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) who gets all the best put downs. Meanwhile, J.D. also has to contend with the nefarious Janitor (Neil Flynn) who seems hell bent on making J.D.’s life hell.
The early seasons really demonstrate sharp writing and allow the performers to pack in a high gag count. There’s also a whole host of guest stars (including Michael J. Fox, Tara Reid and Heather Graham) who get a shot at tickling the funny bone amongst the season regulars. Things get heavier as the show progresses with the characters growing-up and taking on real job responsibilities and fatherhood. For those who want a little pathos and heart with their comedy then Scrubs is a must.
