Poirot - Complete DVD Box Set Collection
For over twenty years, Hercule Poirot, the detective with the dapper moustache, has been a mainstay of British TV drama. Adapted from Agatha Christie's novels, the TV show is one of the country's best loved - and the character, one of the most respected.
Agatha Christie's Poirot, to give the show its full title, first aired in 1989 and, in the years following, has gone on to be nominated for a stunning twenty BAFTA awards, testament to the quality of the show and in-tune with the massive public following. From the Clapham Cook to the Prime Minister himself, Poirot has consistently delivered time and time again.
For those unfamiliar with the legend that is Hercule Poirot (David Suchet), he is a dignified Belgian sleuth called in to solve the most complex of murders. He weaves together crime scene analysis, the hunt for clues and a little psychological analysis, as he unravels crimes that would even leave Morse bemused. Of course, Hercule depends upon a team of co-stars who can all be suitably impressed by his genius, including Hugh Fraser as Hastings and, later, Zoe Wannamaker as Ariadne. Ultimately, though, it's a show that flourishes in it's storytelling - crimes that seem unsolvable, eventually solved by one of the world's greatest investigators.
There's no denying the fact that Poirot, adapted from books now 35 years old, is a very conventional kind of genre drama, but with so many cases for the detective to turn his hand to, the show never seems to get stale. Plots continue to surprise, to twist and turn in new directions, all the while delivering enough red herrings to fill a fishery. Agatha Christie's Poirot is traditional, yes, but in the tradition of Holmes, Marple and Morse, it's incredible television that has earnt it's longevity.
