Okay, let’s be completely honest - Lee Mack’s style of comedy isn’t exactly unique. He operates with absolute deadpan seriousness, which, amongst his contemporaries, is a style Jack Dee absolutely controls. And Not Going Out, Lee Mack’s sitcom is, well, not very unique either. It’s a flatshare, with a fumbling romantic subplot that ticks along nicely but rarely manages to surprise.

But wait!

Lee Mack is a funny man and Not Going Out is, no word of a lie, a really funny sitcom. It’s a blend of the deadpan style you’d expect along with puns, gags, exaggerated and ridiculous characters that burst from the screen. The pilot features a woman going to clown school - that’s pretty indicative of the extremes to which the show goes to get a laugh and, every single time, it works.

Mack’s on-screen Lee is a slacker - jumping from job to job and, at the heart of it, living off the people around him. He lodges with kind-hearted and effortlessly attractive Kate (Megan Dodds) - but will he ever tell her that he feels for her more than a friend? Not if his best friend Tim (Tim Vine) has anything to do with it - he just happens to be Kate’s ex-boyfriend, desperately attempting to rekindle their relationship.

Not original, no, but a scenario that instantly opens a world of conflict and rivalry, a story in motion that jokes and comic moments can be hung upon. And it’s in these witty, intelligent moments - the puns, the wordplay, the misunderstandings - that Not Going Out truly excels. Minute by minute, it’s a funnier show than many of its rivals, and that sheer quantity of comic material is really hard to argue with!

Not Going Out is multi Award winning comedy - not for originality, not for uniqueness of vision, but for being, unashamedly, just a really good laugh.
