NCIS - Seasons 1 to 6 DVD Box Set
Nominated for 2 Emmy's, NCIS: Navel Criminal Investigative Service follows, as the title suggests, a team of investigators who operate within the US Navy from a headquarters in Washington DC. It's a procedural police drama in the vein of CSI and NYPD: Blue - albeit one with an internal twist that keeps the stakes high and the action moving.
Leading the team is Supervisory Special Agent Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon), a no-nonsense sort of guy who places nothing above the investigation at hand. He's old school special agent - a harsh interrogation and a smack on the head if you dare to interrupt. Gibbs takes the lead on the majority of episodes and that's no bad thing - he's the sort of guy who gets things done in a stylish, engaging fashion.
Most interestingly, though, Gibbs doesn't steal the show - he's supported by a team of great characters, including goth investigator Abby (Pauley Perrette) and computer geek Tim (Sean Murray). It's in the ensemble approach to characterisation that NCIS is so impressive - nobody feels as if they're in the show simply to act as foils for our lead character. As the show explores more of their backstories, these are never just bodies to mechanically solve a crime - they're people, people who we care about, people who we genuinely want to see reach their goals.
The show was created by Donald Bellisario, the man responsible for Quantum Leap and, perhaps more pertinently, Magnum P.I. - one of America's best loved detectives. You can rest assured, then, that these expertly defined, truly fascinating characters are dropped into plots of careful design - crimes that are solved through a series of clues that are, whilst plausible, reassuringly unpredictable.
In a crowded market of police procedural TV, NCIS is sometimes a little too easily forgotten - it's the CSIs that steal attention away. But, in truth, NCIS is one of those fantastic hidden gems of TV - a popular show rich in both endearing character and twisty turny plot.
This box set features seasons one to six in their entirety, as well as a deluge of special features to keep die hard fans entertained for hours, including behind the scenes footage and cast and crew roundtables.
