The series focuses for the most part on Don Draper (Jon Hamm), creative director of Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency, as he juggles the needs of his business clients with the needs of his own family. In the office, Draper is an incredible creative force, called upon by the biggest brands in town to handle their latest campaign - but in his personal life, a string of affairs threatens to destroy his home. Will Don be able to keep his infidelities under-wraps in the hostile environment of 1960's America?

In some ways, Mad Men is all about deception and hypocrisy - traits that people in advertising are quite familiar with! Just as Don sells images of brands to America, so too he sells an image of himself to the people around him. As the series progresses, though, his darkest secrets come to the fore and he must face up to who he really is.

Visually, this show is consistently stunning, encapsulating everything that embodies 1960's America. Picket fences, cigarettes in cinemas and a stiff drink at every turn, it's a wonderful world to find yourself lost in for a while. Eventually though, we see beneath that clean, polished decor and into the seedy guts of the decade, riddled with racism, homophobia and inequality for all. It's all a front, all about appearances, and Mad Men intelligently tackles what lies beneath.

In a few short years since it's first episode in 2007, Mad Men has reached heights of acclaim most shows would dream of - three Emmy's and four Golden Globes are just the tip of the awards iceberg. Undeniably, though, it's well deserved - Mad Men is a show quite unlike any other on TV and a must-see for drama fans worldwide.
