If you need any explanation, Lost starts with the most expensive TV pilot made to date, as a plane full of strangers crash-lands on a tropical island. Things explode, people run about and Jack, a dashing young doctor, tries to save as many as he can. It’s event TV, high-budget, high-octane and highly entertaining - but it’s with the introduction of mystery that ‘Lost’ really takes hold on the audience. You see, this uninhabited island may not be as uninhabited as we first thought…

Smokey monsters lurk in the jungle, polar bears wander around in the sunshine and, well, some of the things people recover from could truly be described as miraculous! That’s what Lost is really about - the air of uncertainty and the drips of information that the writers deliver so well. The island has its own unique rules and mythology and the pleasure of Lost, the addiction, is in just wanting to know a little bit more about the place. The show’s greatest asset is in its ability to provoke questions - almost to the extent that when those big answers finally do come, they hardly even matter anymore. It’s reminiscent of ‘Donnie Darko’ or ‘Twin Peaks’ - I’m not sure what exactly happened, but I liked it.

Being created by JJ Abrams (‘Alias’, ‘Mission Impossible 3’), this show manages to blend his trademark action-adventure with subtle characterisation and, through the intelligent use of flashbacks, the survivors soon become people that you care about above all else. This ensures that for every encounter with a big magical monster, there’s a bit of domestic drama, a love triangle or two - all those things that make you fall in love with a show and its cast.

And, ultimately, that’s what all the fuss was about. A group of people that you get to know over six years of TV and, actually, come to quite like spending time with. Make some of them like each other and some of them be enemies. Some of them leaders, some born to follow.

Put those people on a weird island. That right there is hit TV.
