Leverage - Season 2 DVD Box Set
There’s something about the old stories of Robin Hood that stays relevant to this day, a great deal of public love for tales of a man who did bad things, but for the right reasons. A corrupt government, so the stories go, can be taken down by the work of good individuals, vigilantes who step in to make new rules by which we can live. Conveniently, these stories also make for great drama - people like us, looking out for each other and riling up against the establishment.
Leverage, in some ways, is a modernisation of those kind of plots. It follows a team of thieves and con-men, consummate professionals in their criminal lives who make it their purpose to help innocent people who’ve been taken advantage of by those who hold all the power. In practice, this is the government and big business finally being called to account for their deeds. We follow alcoholic former insurance investigator Nate (Timothy Hutton), a character who used to be part of the problem and now, with the help of his team, is bringing a no-nonsense solution. But, for all the good he does, Nate seems eternally unwilling to face up to his own demons - despite the best attempts of the rest of the squad.
In season two, Nate’s brief stint of normality is brutally interrupted with knowledge of a fraudulent bank, and the old team reunites to do what they do best. All of the trademarks are present and the flashback reveals, where we see how the team did what they did, continue to surprise and impress with some very clever writing and storylines of labyrinthine quality. Increasingly, though, things get more personal and as the FBI close in, could it be the end of days for this bunch of kind-hearted crooks?
This second season of Leverage seems to step up to a whole new level - where season one introduced characters and defined a great heist format, the stakes get bigger episode-on-episode and the action truly is edge of your seat stuff. If you’re a fan of the show, this is more of the same - and if you’re a fan of Hustle or Oceans 11, this could be right up your street.
This DVD box set contains the complete season two of this slick, stylish drama.
