Inspector Morse - Complete DVD Box Set

David Mitchell, of Peep Show fame, wrote recently that whenever he wants to watch the television, he wants to watch Morse. It’s easy to agree with that sentiment. As time passes and ITV drama becomes more gimmicky, and ITV in general becomes more, well, Simon Cowell based, its easy to hanker for a time when one could immerse themselves on a Sunday evening in this rich and rewarding detective drama.

Help is at hand with this box-set collating all 33 episodes of the show. Based of course on the detective novels by Colin Dexter, and starring the inimitable late John Thaw as Endeavour (ahem) Morse and Kevin Whately as his more amiable junior detective Lewis, this was a TV adaptation that really captured both the grandeur and intrigue of the Oxford setting and more importantly the intricacies of the title character himself.

Thus, whilst the mystery or detective element of the show is first-rate and we’ll keep viewers gripped, it is the character development and acting of Thaw and Whately that really make this such a treat and a stand-out from the welter of similar dramas of the last twenty years. Morse’s erudite upper-class cynicism and snobbery is never nasty enough to be anything other than entertaining, and his relationship with his partner, the happy-go-luckier, working-class, practical Lewis, is often very amusing.

This box-set also contains three hours of documentaries, and along with the show’s themselves this really is a great collection to while away those interminable Sunday afternoon’s with once you’ve had enough of Mr. Cowell or whatever antique-based repeat show is on.
