In some ways, Grey's Anatomy is an American version of Holby City - a look at a medical system and a variety of medical cases, but linked by characters whose personal lives are the source of much of the drama. For every moment of diagnosis, for every interesting new medical plot line, there's a wonderfully personal touch, a collection of characters who are sure to keep you coming back with their witty dialogue and heartbreaking personal lives.

For the most part, the focus remains on the eponymous Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), the narrator of the episodes and the eyes through which we see the world. She's a doctor, yes, but also a woman whose life is defined completely by her romantic relationships, giving the show a very intimate tone. In the course of the show, Meredith is a character who demands a great deal of sympathy - sometimes funny, sometimes irrational, but constantly lovable. Contrasting with these tales from Meredith's personal life, weekly medical cases provide life and death drama that work brilliantly alongside the smaller, more subtle scenes.

Alongside Meredith herself, supporting characters show equal depth - particularly cocky Preston (Isaiah Washington) who over time continues to surprise with new depths and hidden facets. Ultimately, though, this is true of all the characters - just when you think you're getting to know someone, they change forever in the blink of an eye.

One distinction between Grey's Anatomy and it's UK counterparts is, of course, the budget! As a result, Grey's is a gorgeously shot, polished production, married impeccably with an incredible popular music soundtrack. Episodes often end with 'songtages' - a series of scenes set to a song, guaranteed to wring every last tear out of you! The show uses an excellent script, classy performances and this outstanding soundtrack to deliver one of the best medical dramas in TV history.
