The third and final series of James Corden and Ruth Jones’ comedy looses none of its effortless charm. While star Matthew Horne and Corden failed to shine elsewhere (namely their weak sketch show and movie disaster Lesbian Vampire Killers), in Gavin & Stacey they’re back on track as matey mates Gavin (or “Gavlaaar”) and Smithy.

Gavin & Stacey is a show based around two families – one in Billericay, Essex and the other from Barry in Wales – joined together by Gavin and Stacey’s (Joanna Page) marriage. The third series is set mostly in the quiet seaside town of Barry as Gavin starts his new job and he and Stacey try for a baby.

The most refreshing thing about the show is its comedy is based around recognisable family situations and conflicting characters, not some gimmick that tries to make it stand out from the crowd of British sitcoms. Series 3 is plotted around the christening of Smithy and Nessa’s (Jones) son from their one-night-stand and Nessa’s upcoming marriage to coach driver Dave. All pretty standard events but Gavin & Stacey’s success is in its sharply written dialogue and the way it celebrates family life as what joins us all together.

Of course, much of the comedy comes from Rob Brydon’s endearing Bryn who’s quiet amazement and enthusiasm often provides the show’s most quotable lines. In Episode 3 he really gets excited as all the lads from Essex are paying a visit and he transforms his place into the ultimate bachelor pad. Also keep an eye out in Episode 6 for some wonderful guest stars at Nessa’s big wedding.

Throughout Gavin & Stacey we’ve been inducted into a circle of family and friends that we’ve really come to feel a part of. While Series 3 certainly gives them a fond farewell, it’s just incredibly sad that this might be the last we’ll see of one of the Beeb’s best comedy shows.

If you haven't already got the series 1 and 2 box set, the Complete Gavin and Stacey box set might be a better choice with all 3 series' and the Christmas Special.
