Family Guy - Season 1 to 9 DVD Box Set
Animated TV comedy - or cartoons, as they were known when they were just for kids - are now the product of adults raised on a diet of The Simpsons and ready for something a little bit harder. Where live-action sitcom depends on a low-budget, location specific approach, today’s writers and artists embrace the unique ability of animation to go anywhere and do anything - budget isn’t an issue, providing there’s lead in the pencil.
Family Guy is probably the most successful of these adult-orientated ‘toons, a show that sits somewhere between sitcom and sketch show, following loosely formed storylines whilst routinely diverging into surreal flashbacks from Peter Griffin’s life. The format is very knowing, full of intelligent nods to the audience that, yes, these flashbacks exist only to get a laugh - but in a comedy, what’s so wrong with that?
Peter Griffin is a family guy only in so much as he has a wife, three kids, and a talking dog - in practice, he is a well-intentioned buffoon who, despite wanting a happy home life, is forever doomed to not quite attain one. He’s not to blame, though - he’s forever outwitted and superseded by both Brian, his stylish and well-spoken pet, and Stewie who, for a one year old, has an unnerving obsession with taking over the world. It’s these supporting characters that steal the show time and time again, always sure to deliver those big comic set-pieces and sizzling one-liners.
For the most part, Family Guy is unashamedly juvenile - aimed at adults, yes, but adults with a childlike sensibility and a taste for juvenile gags. What it has, though, is an imagination. Family Guy is always willing to depart into storylines that on reflection make little sense, but are hilarious escapades all the same.
This box set contains every episode from seasons one to nine and what it highlights is how Family Guy has evolved in the decade it’s been on air. The format that is now so popular - and award winning - evolves naturally from the extreme personalities of the wacky Griffin family and never feels like a forced structure for the show to sit in. Instead, Family Guy is silly, surreal, sure-fire comedy, which achieves a very simple but secretly complex task - it’ll make you laugh, every single time.
