For those unfamiliar with the show, it’s a darkly comic look at a man whose appetite for death must be fed - but whose job for the Miami police department sometimes gets in the way. This time round, Dexter (Michael C Hall) is a family man, living in the suburbs with his newly born son to care for. He’s happy enough and, seemingly, has it all - is this Dexter on the cusp of becoming a reformed citizen?

The short answer is no. Dexter’s just as dastardly as ever, sneaking off for a light bit of killing as soon as Rita’s back is turned. Meanwhile, his colleagues investigate a man known as the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), who kills according to a pattern - first a young woman, then mother of two, and finally a father of two. Repeat. When Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) comes face to face with the killer, though, Dexter must step in to save the day - albeit using some unorthodox methods!

Lithgow’s performance is outstanding as a man who depends upon an ordered, repetitive life. To Dexter, though, this all sounds a little too familiar and he soon realises that, truth told, the two of them have an awful lot in common.

Delivering on the premise of earlier seasons, these episodes feel even more ruthless and consistently engaging. Decisions have clearly been made by the writers that nobody is safe and some shock deaths early on are sure to get things moving. Meanwhile, Dexter’s character continues to develop in new and surprising ways, as his boundaries fall further down and he truly makes the mistake of letting people into his life.

Dexter is an outstanding piece of drama that strikes just the right balance between police procedural, macabre comedy and ruthless drama and this season four box set is highly recommended.
