In the past ten years, the superhero genre has entered something of a renaissance, with the incredible relaunch of Batman and the slightly-less-successful attempt to rebrand Superman. It was, of course, a matter of time before TV jumped on the bandwagon - but with so many well-established heroes already in the cinemas, can TV really take the genre in new and creative directions?

Heroes follows an ensemble of characters whose lives intertwine with global repercussions, all of whom have a genetic mutation that makes them, well, superheroes. Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar) can fly, Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) can travel through time, Clare Benett (Hayden Panettiere) can heal the wounded and Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia) can - well, that would be telling! Naturally, these characters are forced to work together to save the world, all the while under threat from all round bad guy Sylar (Zachary Quinto) and under watch from a mysterious group known only as The Company. Stories are built around cause and effect, giving a real sense of logic to the narrative which sees each character’s power being put to very specific use.

Ultimately, though, Heroes doesn’t allow itself to be caught up on the big picture. The ‘save the world’ thread is often relied on for epic battles and impressive CGI, but the focus of the show is often on characterisation and the very real, relatable question - how would you cope if you discovered you were so very different to other people? It’s through discussion of this issue that Heroes draws its emotional depth, creating a great counterpoint to the far-fetched silliness that the genre does so well.

As the show progresses through its four seasons, it must be said that the overarching plot reaches levels of complication rarely seen outside rocket science. It’s not always an easy show to keep up with and, with multiple timelines at play, it’s hard to say what happened to who and when. That said, for the persistent and those who pay attention, the payoff to the story is remarkably well done and ensures that the entire project feels, above all else, cohesive.

Heroes is a fantastic fantasy drama that looks at the superhero story from a new and interesting angle. This box set features the show in its entirety across four seasons, a fast-paced sci-fi with a lot of heart beneath the action.
