Doctor Who - Series 1 to 4 Complete DVD Box Set
After the BBC failed to revitalise the long-running Dr. Who series with Paul McGann in 1996, few could have imagined the primetime success it now enjoys. Russell T. Davies seemed an unlikely candidate to pen a new version after his critical success with Queer as Folk but 2005 saw Christopher Eccleston step into the TARDIS and the rest is history.
The first series of the ‘reimagining’ removes the campness traditionally associated with the series and is decidedly more gritty and realistic. The Doctor is complex and mysterious, and Davies even plays with his sexual orientation in banter with John Barrowman’s dashing Captain Harkness. But it’s the wide-eyed innocence of former pop star Billie Piper that gives the series a much wider family appeal.
After Eccleston made the Doctor hip again, it was David Tennant’s embodiment during the next three series that really grew the character. Davies gets to the heart of the universe’s last Timelord and the cause and effect of having so much power. The Doctor’s frequently pushed to his limit and is constantly faced with loosing those close to him, giving the show an emotional core amongst all the saving the world heroics.
The episodes themselves follow the Doctor and his companions travelling through time and space to solve mysteries and thwart villains like the Daleks and the Cybermen. But each series also has clues to an overriding arc that delivers the Doctor to a typically thrilling showdown.
Dr. Who has created some of the best TV shows in recent years, including the frankly terrifying Blink in series 3, but is this box set a little premature? Tennant is still finishing his tenure with upcoming specials so perhaps it would have been wiser to wait until his and Davies’ reign truly comes to an end, before actor Matt Smith and writer Steven Moffat continue their legacy.
