Battlestar Galactica - Limited Edition Complete DVD Box Set
The original Battlestar Galactica of 1978 only lasted for one season but it quickly gained cult status and there were numerous attempts to revive it until David Eick and Ronald D. Moore struck gold with a 2003 miniseries. Their version was dark and gritty, starting with the nuclear annihilation of the Twelve Colonies civilization of humans by a race of machines known as Cylons. A TV series was quickly commissioned which followed the journey of a handful of survivors aboard the Battlestar Galactica trying to find a mythical new home known as Earth.
Post-9/11, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica was one of the few American shows to really capture the psychology of a new and terrifying world. It added an extra dimension by including Cylon’s who looked like humans and therefore able to infiltrate the crew. Suddenly the enemy was unknowable and in later seasons this leads to a Cylon civil war and questions the hatred between humans and Cylons in the first place.
The show is also an intriguing microcosm of American politics and beliefs with President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) frequently challenged to make tough decisions for the greater good and Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos) having to protect the fleet from an increasingly deadly threat – essentially a ‘war on terror’. Religion is also a big theme, most notably in The Hand of God episode in which Baltar (James Callis), who inadvertently brought about the destruction of the Twelve Colonies after being seduced by Number Six (Tricia Helfer), allows a decision to be left up to God.
Battlestar Galactica transcends science fiction and is truly a product of its time, reflecting modern attitudes and using metaphor to comment on the world of today. By alluding to the occupation of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan, the show gets the viewer thinking about the world they live in - sci-fi at its best.
