Toy Story - 1 to 3 DVD Box Set
The great thing about kids, in my experience, is they’ll watch anything. Pop in a straight-to-DVD Disney flick and the moment the credits roll, they’ll ask you to start it again. They are, at times, easily entertained. The flipside, of course, is that you’re more fussy - and if you have to hit play on that DVD again, you may well go insane.
Buy the Toy Story set. That’s an instruction, not an impartial review comment. It’s hilarious children's comedy at one moment and, in an instant, touching drama for the adults.
It’s easy to forget just how significant the first Toy Story was in 1995 - a whole movie made on a computer. It was the thing of dreams but, ultimately, a technical achievement that means nothing today. What stands out, really, is that it’s a film with characters we love - Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), even the little green army men - and an adventure story that would be just as exceptional if it was live action, or drawn by hand, or scrawled on the back of a post-it. The technology garnered attention but, fifteen years later, the technology doesn’t matter.
What’s really important - and is true of all three films - is that these stories are about a toy’s loyalty to their owner, but really about true love, about self-sacrifice, and in the last movie about love that might be unrequited. It’s testament to the technology that all three films look exceptional - but it’s testament to the storytelling that the closing moments of the trilogy are some of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve seen in years.
Safe to say, then, Pixar make great movies - and helpfully, they also make great DVDs. The extra features across all three films are fascinating insights into the background of putting a film like this together, covering every aspect of the process as well out-takes, trailers and other promotional material.
Ultimately, these three films are the pinnacle of computer animation but, over time, may well just be remembered alongside Disney classics as the greatest animated movies of all time.
