Toy Story is a work of modern genius.  From a relatively simple concept (toys come to life when humans aren’t watching) the incredibly creative and enduringly successful whizzes at Pixar were able to weave a universe of such depth, with such attention-to-detail, that both the original and its sequel are infinitely enjoyable for both children and adults alike.

The first film, for the few uninitiated, tells the story of Andy’s favourite toy, Woody the Cowboy, feeling replaced by the ultra-modern Buzz Lightyear toy that has just arrived. In the second, Woody gets toynapped by a toy collector (Wayne Knight) and the other toys set out to rescue him.

The characters are great, voiced by the insanely likeable Tom Hanks (Woody) and Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) alongside a host of very funny supporting roles (Cheers’ John Ratzenberger as Hamm, R Lee Emery of Full Metal Jacket as the leader of an efficient set of army toys). Whilst they are of course primarily kids films, the jokes, parodies and postmodern references are all fantastic for the parents, and there is an emotional depth in the themes of friendship, growing up and letting things go that runs through both. Plus it’s great when Buzz goes a little mad and starts wearing a dress.
