The River Cottage - DVD Collection
He might not be as hip as Jamie or as commanding as Gordon but chef Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall has carved out a nice little niche as a down to earth guy who cares about real food. His River Cottage series focuses on food production and consumption, mixing the reality of self-sufficiency with recipes using home grown produce.
This box set follows on from the first three series as Hugh moves his enterprise from Dorset to Devon and altogether consists of 7 series over a massive 10 discs, starting with Beyond River Cottage. This collection is markedly different from his early adventures in which he got to grips with the trials and tribulations of living off the land and concentrates more on getting the public back to basics when it comes to food.
Hugh covers plenty of ground and provides an eye-opening look at the realities behind farming and how supermarket competitiveness is ruining the quality of the food we buy. Gone Fishing investigates sustainable fishing around Britain while A Cook on the Wild Side sees Hugh having more fun sourcing ingredients from the countryside. Spring and Autumn concentrate on seasonal recipes and feel much more relaxed than the campaigning style found in other series.
The River Cottage Treatment finds Hugh at his most lecturing as he challenges various members of the public to give up their fast food ways by showing them the truth behind battery farming. Although it now seems obvious, it was down to chefs like Hugh who really bought issues like this into people’s living rooms and started the organic food revolution. Unfortunately, Hugh’s views often seem unrealistic for many on a tight budget, and whether anyone would go out of their way to cook one of his recipes is another matter, but he’s an enthusiastic presenter and those with an interest in food and where it comes from will find something here.
