Nature and natural history has always had a place on television - from the earliest days of the BBC, for example, filmmakers have been able to transport audiences to far away places, showing them things they had little opportunity to see in person. It’s truly what television was made to do and, over the years, the nature documentary has educated, enlightened and above all entertained generations of viewers.

Human Planet, following on from the success of Life and Planet Earth, takes a look at one of the most under explored subjects in the nature documentary genre - us. The human race, more than any other animal species, has evolved to incredible extremes and come to inhabit remarkably different habitats, one of which is explored in each of the series’ eight episodes. Yes, to an extent the show looks at the relationship between humans and other animals, but at it’s heart it is an ode to the unique ability we all have to adapt to our surroundings.

For the most part, episodes take place in different varieties of wilderness - from rare footage of tribesmen surviving in jungles, to some unusual uses that we have found for the rivers and oceans that surround us. Particularly interesting, though, is the final episode, devoted to the many cities that we have built for ourselves. Treating them as habitats for animals, it’s truly fascinating to explore a world that’s very familiar to us all, but rarely given attention in this type of documentary.

With an award winning soundtrack and footage that is genuinely incredible, Human Planet is an awe-inspiring documentary. So much television - even rival documentary shows - educates and informs - transports you to another place. That’s the ability of natural history documentary and a powerful function of television. Human Planet, though, does something more - it just might make you look at yourself and the world around you in new ways. What more could you possibly ask for than that?
