This intriguing show from the BBC pulled off the not-so-easy trick of managing to balance entertainment and education without becoming either too schmaltzy or too dry.  One need only witness the cloying efforts of the presenters on the more recent BBC effort Bang Goes the Theory to appreciate how easily a too strenuous effort to persuade the viewer they aren’t bored by science can actually be counterproductive. Coast proves that as long as your presenter is enthusiastic enough about an interesting subject, you don’t need to any gimmicky tricks to keep people watching.

This box-set contains all four series’ of the show. Series 1 and 2 join the various presenters on a journey around the UK coastline, starting with Dover, with focused short pieces on points of interest in chosen towns and points of interest along the way. Series 3 and 4 repeat the format, but expand beyond the UK to include the absolutely stunning coastline of Ireland, and then also incorporating such far-flung places as Norway.

Of course, it is a debatable point as to how a series such as this stands up to repeat DVD viewing. However Coast is watchable again and again often purely for the stunning camerawork detailing the magnificent beauty of our coastline, in much the same way as it is always a pleasure to watch the BBC’s natural history programmes. It is also an excellent family educational resource, especially for geography teachers!
