The Tudors - Series 4 DVD Box Set
Full of style, wit and passion, The Tudors is far from your normal period drama fare - a truly modern story that above all else captures the spirit of Henry VIII’s reign. It’s the story of power, lust, sex and corruption on an epic scale where one man’s decisions will impact an entire society’s way of life.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (‘Bend It Like Beckham’, ‘Match Point’) returns in season four as a King determined to secure his legacy in lieu of a male heir. After his marriage to Catherine Howard (Tamzin Merchant), Henry’s desperate need for more - more power, more control - leads him to a series of reckless decisions that threaten to undermine his entire rule. With Catholics fighting Protestants and England fighting France, will Henry be remembered as a great King or an insane dictator?
As ever, Rhys-Meyers is divine as one of history’s best-known monarchs, bringing a very personal, intimate side to the man beneath the crown. He’s supported by excellent performances all-round, most notably Joely Richardson as Katherine Parr, the last in a long line of Royal wives.
If you’re a fan of the show, this final season is a must-see - the long-awaited resolution of a story that’s been engaging and exciting throughout. The Tudors radiates this gritty decadence that really transports you to a seedy, earthy place ruled by a King whose lust and hot-temper affects his every decision. Excellent performances, a budget big enough to do Tudor England justice and a characterisation of the King that is accurate, essentially, but also empathetic and relatable.
Being the last DVD release that this show will have, the bonus features are of the highest quality - particularly creator MIchael Hirst’s feelings on bringing The Tudors to a close. Also included are some features to give a sense of what happened next - how the actions of Henry in reality played out in subsequent Royal generations.
This box set features the fourth and final season of The Tudors in its entirety - a remarkable ending fit for a King.
