Emmy award-winning Life on Mars tells the story of Sam Tyler (John Simm), a D.C.I. serving with the Greater Manchester police force. After being knocked unconscious in a car accident, Sam wakes up to find that it’s 1973, almost dinner time and his new D.C.I. is having hoops.

Unsure whether he is in a coma-induced dream or has actually travelled back in time, Sam finds himself under the command of Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) a tough, old school police officer with every imaginable prejudice and a belief that a hunch is as good as evidence when keeping scum off the streets.

Sam’s thoroughly modern, by-the-book and politicaly correct policing methods don’t go down well, resulting in some fantastic chemistry between Sam and the scene-stealing Gene whose repetoir of consistently brilliant one liners and no-nonsense philosophy have seen the character become an national institution.

Life on Mars captures the flavour of retro 70’s cop shows like the Sweeny and The Professionals perfectly while the time travelling sub-plot prevents it from seeming overly-nostaligic and creates plenty of opportunities for social commentary, humour and dark intrigue.
