Breaking Bad - Season 2 DVD Box Set
Breaking Bad’s second season kicks off where the first left off (earlier than planned due to the 2008 writer’s strike in the U.S.); with Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) wondering how they’ve managed to get into business with a terrifyingly unhinged drug lord. Things start out pretty bad for Albuquerque’s most unlikely crystal meth dealers, and get progressively, and inevitably, much, much worse in this continually excellent show.
Walt is drawn further and further into the criminal underworld he decided to enter in the first season to pay for his medical bills and support his family upon learning he has terminal lung cancer. Whilst he seemingly began to start cooking and selling crystal meth for understandable reasons, the actions and decisions he is forced to take to compete in the drug business, as well as hide his secret life from his family (not least his brother-in-law Hank, who just happens to be with the DEA) are increasingly extreme and morally questionable. Moreover, whilst Walt is acting with the freedom of a condemned man, he is dragging the young, naïve and troubled Jesse further into a life he wants to escape. These ambiguities and dilemmas are always subtly handled, allowing the viewer to tease them out, rather than the sledge-hammer approach of recent British attempts at glossy dramas (think the entertaining but flawed Luther).
Cranston (who also directs some episodes) is brilliant as Walt and has been deservedly picking up awards in the U.S. He is ably supported by the familiar cast of Paul, Anna Gunn as his wife, and Dean Norris as the no-nonsense Hank. Its gritty stuff, but there is a line of black humour that runs through it that provides some relief from the compelling tension. Highly recommended - this box set has all thirteen episodes from this season, and a host of extras that take you behind the scenes of the show.
