Since the meteoric rise of CSI and all its assorted spin-offs, it's hard to do a forensic procedural drama with any sense of originality. Audiences know the techniques, the kind of crimes and the typical plot twists of the genre. Bones, though, is a show that proves it's all about the characters, breathing new life into the genre and making a refreshing change from Grissom and his team!

Bones is a darkly comic drama, built around the unusual match of closeted forensic anthropologist Dr 'Bones' Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and down-to-earth everyman FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). Much of the comedy comes from this unlikely couple, constantly in a state of light conflict as they attempt to solve their current case. Despite all of their contrasting qualities, though, one thing is for certain - they need each other.

Bones herself is an introvert, seemingly unable to interact socially with anyone other than the bodies she analyses. Booth, meanwhile, is the consummate socialite and convenient psychoanalyst, able to discern motives and deceptions with those in the realm of the living. Together they're a team to be reckoned with, effortlessly uncovering the truth that should've been buried with the deceased - and the show is supported almost entirely by their chemistry, both professional and personal.

I say almost entirely because, in truth, the storylines that Bones and Brennan undertake are all very well executed, even if character development sometimes steals the attention. Cases always manage to surprise, moving in unpredictable directions and towards magnificent, action-packed climaxes - but ultimately, these incredibly well thought-out characters are what you'll truly fall in love with.
