The IT Crowd - Series 1 to 4 DVD Box Set
Geeks, it seems, are this generation’s hot property in sitcoms - after all, what’s funnier than someone clever enough to deliver wit, but stupid enough to email the fire service as the room incinerates around them? It’s a comedy trend that’s crossed the pond but, ultimately, it’s a comedy trend that started here.
Written by Graham Linehan (Father Ted), The IT Crowd follows two IT technicians - slacker Roy (Chris O Dowd) and wunderkind Moss (Richard Ayoade). They’re lovable ‘standard nerds, stuck in the dark, murky basement of Reynholm Industries - a building which otherwise enjoys stunning vistas of London and stylish glass and chrome finish. Essentially, that’s what this sitcom is about - the contrast between the overworked, under-appreciated IT guys and the seemingly carefree, occasionally inept office staff.
But when computer illiterate new employee Jen (Katherine Parkinson) finds herself head of the IT department, she vows to bring Roy and Moss into the limelight - will they ever really fit in with the effortless cool of upstairs?
The short answer is no! Their attempts to interact with the real world always fall short, these two men stuck in their ways much to the dismay of Jen. Cue excellent comedy set-pieces and a feeling of outright farce that’s rarely seen on TV these days. What start out as seemingly innocuous situations spiral out of control, leading always to inspired, surreal, hilarious outcomes. At the end of the day, these two boffins are never going to gain social standing within Reynholm Industries - and, secretly, we don’t really want them to.
Of particular note is Richard Ayoade’s performance. His character is reminiscent of Father Ted’s Dougal - a man whose stupidity sometimes crosses the line into being far-fetched silliness, but is always played with absolute conviction. Every single time Moss appears on screen, you know you’re in for a laugh.
Aside from the three leads, though, the supporting cast is a who’s who of comedy - The Mighty Boosh’s Noel Fielding makes a star turn as Richmond, Matt Berry (Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace) brings his obscure delivery to Douglas Reynholm and all-round comic genius Chris Morris is the unnerving, slightly insane Denholm Reynholm through series one and two. Put these people together in scenes and getting a chuckle is a pretty easy task!
The IT Crowd is a very traditional sitcom with a very modern subject and this ingenious blend makes for a solid, constantly entertaining show - a deserving recipient of BAFTA and Emmy acclaim presented here in the complete series one to four set.
