Outnumbered - Series 1 and 2 DVD Box Set

Outnumbered is an understated little gem of a sitcom. Written and directed by Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton (who you may remember as writers from Drop the Dead Donkey, and the latter as a regular and always funny guest on several BBC panel shows), it’s set around the suburban household life, and its all too familiar minor yet major struggles, of the Brockman family. Dad Pete (Hugh Dennis), Mum Sue (Claire Skinner) play second fiddle, both in terms of the plot and the laughs, to their three brutally honest and constantly questioning children.

Whilst the writing on Outnumbered is clearly great, one often gets the sense watching this show that they could have just put a camera in front of the children and let them speak and it would have been almost as funny. Indeed, there is an improvisational element to the show, where the children are apparently encouraged to say something unexpected and Dennis and Skinner have to think fast (probably just struggling not to laugh) and react. This gives the show an originality sorely lacking in many other more run-of-the-mill family sitcoms that have emerged and disappeared in the last few years.

This box set contains all the episodes from series one and two of this clever and funny show, as well as deleted and longer scenes, interviews, and some very funny skits done for Comic Relief.
