Glee is not so much a TV show as it is a phenomenon. Wildly successful in the U.S, its predicted fortunes in the UK were perhaps summed up by the fact Channel 4 decided to originally put it on their E4 channel rather than the real thing, suggesting it was going to be another modest niche American hit for tied to the television teenagers. However it soon broke through these bounds to inspire a widespread fan base, bordering upon obsession for the self confessed ‘gleeks’.

Glee follows the fortunes of the ‘New Directions’ glee club, a school choir at the William McKinley High School in Ohio. It’s the familiar cool kids vs. not so cool kids storyline, as the club, led by all round nice guy Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), battles for recognition against the school’s favoured ‘Cheerios’ cheerleading team. There are also love stories, cheating wives, lots of songs, lots of dances and all manner of high school japes along the way.

There’s no doubt there are elements of the show that will annoy the more casual, (some would say cynical) viewer. The characters break into song all too often. Many of the storylines are corny and hackneyed, employing all the old American high-school tropes. A lot of the characters are annoying. However, not only will the ‘gleeks’ exclaim this exactly why they love it, even those cynical viewers, should they watch it for more than five minutes, be hard pressed not to find the show surprisingly funny. This is partly because it is a lot smarter than others of its kind, but mainly because of the downright edgy performance of the show’s unlikely star Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester; the egomaniacal, terrifying, obsessively glee-club-hating, profane, will-stop-at-nothing coach of the Cheerios. Put simply, she is brilliant.

So, even if you’re not a ‘gleek’, you’ll at least have something to enjoy if a member of your household is, and decides to watch this 24/7. And, if you are, this box set has plenty of extras for you to enjoy after you’ve finished watching it for the umpteenth time, including video diaries, a making of, and…. karaoke!
