Flight Of The Conchords - Series 1 and 2 DVD Box Set
Brett and Jermaine are Flight of the Conchords, a folk-pop duo from New Zealand struggling to make it big in New York. Unfortunately, they are stuck in a tragic-comic reality where that is never going to happen. Willingly and un-ably helped by their slightly out-of-touch manager Murray (the superbly dry Rhys Darby), supported by their singular deranged fan Mel (Kristin Schall of The Daily Show) and given delusional romantic ‘advice’ from their lone friend Dave (stand-up Arj Barker) they veer from gigs in public libraries to getting mugged on the mean streets to experiencing night-time visions of David Bowie circa 1986, all via the medium of comedy song.
Whilst it is always a risky thing to assert, this show maybe truly unique. Its mixture of situation comedy and humorous musical numbers is not one that has been tried often, at least not with this much success. Comparisons have been drawn with The Mighty Boosh, but whilst that was self-consciously surreal throughout, here the strangeness of suddenly bursting into bizarre three minute raps is undercut and made all the more hilarious by that fact the rest of the show is played with an unrivalled earnestness. The characters seem utterly unaware of how ridiculous they are, which adds a pathos to the whole thing that is that much more amusing than the calculated madness of The Mighty Boosh.
Highly recommended for those who haven’t yet entered the beguiling world of Brett and Jermaine, and great comfort viewing for those who have, this box-set includes all 24 episodes from the two HBO seasons.
