Breaking Bad - Series 1 DVD Box Set
American television really has been spoiling us the last few years with a gaggle of long-running, well-produced, highly entertaining and above all smart shows. Breaking Bad is another to add to a list that includes The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men et al of real quality U.S. programming.
Created by The X Files’ Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad follows the ever-so-slightly changing life of American suburban archetype Walter White (think Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, only more downtrodden), played brilliantly by Bryan Cranston in a - ahem - different role from the one he played as the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle. Upon learning he has terminal lung-cancer in the first episode, White decides to make his family some money by using the skills developed as a put-upon chemistry teacher to start cooking up some crystal meth to sell around his Albuquerque home. This rather radical life change does not go too smoothly and Walter is forced into increasingly difficult juggling acts to keep the realities and consequences of his new ‘job’ from reaching his demanding wife (Anna Gunn) and teenage son (R.J. Mitte).
With great set-pieces, realistic dialogue and equally great acting, Breaking Bad will appeal to those who like their humour on the blacker side, and anyone who enjoyed the slow-burn but always gripping nature of the other successful shows mentioned above. This box set contains all seven episodes from the first season, as well as deleted scenes, commentaries and other extras.
