When you have sold out the O2, hosted Have I Got News For You, appeared as a team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and generally established yourself as somewhat of a national treasure, it might irk you a bit to be described as ‘a cult favourite’ in almost every review you appear in. However that appears to be the lot of cult favourite Bill Bailey.

Its understandable that a comedian who’s act hinges on surreal tangential adventures betwixt and between politics, philosophy, religion, war and doing the washing up under the influence, intertwined with drum and bass versions of the BBC news theme and rock operas about the threat of spider dominion, should struggle to find those who would describe him as ‘mainstream’. But whilst Bailey’s Dadaist style may always keep him a cult figure, the sheer joy, intelligence and approachability of his performance and delivery has generated fantastic success beyond the student bedroom.

For the first time, this box set provides all of Bill’s big-selling DVD releases, from 1995’s Cosmic Jam tour right up to his recent show at the O2, Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra, in one great value package. Arguably the earlier shows in the intimate settings are more enjoyable - the wild-eyed rambling nature of Bailey’s flights of imagination through space and time seems more convincing and more suited to a theatre full of people rather than an arena full of them. However there is a great enjoyment in seeing him lead the whole of a Wembley crowd in a chorus of “I’ve got ham but I’m not a hamster,’ and the new show really is wonderful.

Stand up comedy is often a strange thing to own on DVD, but Bill Bailey is one of a few that’s worth having in your collection. Its great to introduce those who have managed to avoid seeing him to his strange and magical world, and if you ever need cheering up there aren’t many better ways than watching Mr. Bailey singing Lionel Ritchie standards in German.
