Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Seasons 1 to 4 DVD Box Set
ATHF is one of Adult Swim’s many spin-offs (along with Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law) that came from its spoof animated talk show Space Ghost Coast to Coast and is now its longest running series. Their Coast to Coast episode never actually aired but the creators of the characters, Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, were able to salvage their idea to produce a rude, crude comedy series that follows a nihilistic bunch of fast food objects on apparent ‘adventures’.
In the first season, early episodes show Master Shake (a milkshake voiced by Dana Snyder), Frylock (a portion of fries, Carey Means) and Meatwad (a shapeless meat... blob, Willis) actually solving crimes and foiling the villain Dr. Weird. Quickly though, Dr. Weird becomes an opening gag that forms no basis for the episodes which instead follow the trio knocking about their dilapidated New Jersey home and arguing with their brash neighbour, Carl Brutananadilewski (also Willis).
So, in true South Park tradition, ATHF is anarchic and surreal, but without South Park’s eye for character or clever satire. ATHF is much more random and disjointed, plotlines come and go without any real structure and characters frequently die only to be resurrected. The comedy itself stems from the three characters arguing; Meatwad is somewhat childlike and selfish, Shake is the uncaring leader and Frylock frequently represents the voice of reason. The vocal work is good but the stilted animation and long scenes make the short episodes feel painfully protracted.
But the show has been a huge success. Its FTW attitude has won over many teenagers and even led to a feature film in 2007. Fans of anything resembling a story will hate it but it’s perfect fodder for teen slackers after a quick comedy hit, although perhaps that hit is better suited to late-night TV rather than DVD.
