30 Rock - Season 4 DVD Box Set
Now in its fourth season, Tina Fey’s 30 Rock continues to uphold the very high, incredibly witty, downright clever and best of all seriously funny standards it has set itself in its first three outings. This box sets contains all the episodes from the latest series of NBC’s irreverent flagship show, and fans can be rest assured it’s as good as ever.
However, for those who haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying this show yet, 30 Rock is a semi-autobiographical sitcom about a struggling writer-producer (Liz Lemon, as played by creator Tina Fey) working for entertainment show TGS (read Saturday Night Live, which Fey wrote for previously) on NBC. Fey, and of course her team of writers, use this semi-fictional platform to mercilessly satirise the ridiculousness of the media, the pretensions of actors, and even the struggling fortunes of NBC itself. The comedy ranges from the smartly acerbic (Liz’s boss Jack Donaghue’s, played pitch perfect by the brilliant Alec Baldwin, cruel but effective put-downs of her appearance), to the very silly (Kevin the Page Boy, the disturbingly naïve Jack McBrayer, dislocating his bones to squeeze through a catflap) to the political (Jack’s constant ironic references to ‘Comrade Obama’s recession’).
The storyline in this fourth season of 30 Rock hinges around Liz’s continuing search for love, which sees her dating our very own excellent Michael Sheen (of The Damned United and Frost/Nixon), Jack’s relationship with an old school friend (played by Julianne Moore) and the search for a new star on TGS (to the hilarious dismay of hyper-sensitive existing TGS stars and guaranteed scene-stealers Tracy and Jenna - Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski respectively). Like The Simpsons many of the jokes and references are meant for American audiences, but, also like The Simpsons, the writing is so good, and the characters so funny, that it transcends any cultural boundaries. Real quality comedy.
